#23 Right Painting

In this post, a short paper from a few years ago, I bring up the theme of the Liturgy and Gontcharova’s attempts, along with Stravinsky and Diaghilev, to bring it to the stage with music and dance. What I really want you to notice however is the image of ‘Abraham and Isaac’ that I used to illustrate the text. We’ve been spending a lot of time on the Backwards Hand and Wrong Painting etc and her utilization of those things in her story telling but with Abraham and Isaac what we see is her ability to do things the ‘right way’ and to show us a perfectly harmonious design. I guess I’m thinking it may help to remember that all the wrong painting is purposeful and in fact what enables her to do it all so deftly and successfully is that she is a very talented painter and highly trained draftsman who chooses to paint wrong.
